STOTT PILATES® Certification

STOTT PILATES® is the contemporary approach to the original mind-body exercise method pioneered by Joseph Pilates. A progression in Pilates that incorporates modern exercise science and rehabilitation principles, STOTT PILATES is a safe and effective low-impact way to stretch, strengthen and streamline your body.

STOTT PILATES is internationally renowned for the quality of its training. STOTT PILATES® certified instructors are among the most sought after Pilates teachers in the world. Developed by former professional dancer, Moira Merrithew, along with input from sports medicine professionals, STOTT PILATES® is a contemporary, anatomically-based approach to Joseph Pilates’ original exercise method.

As a student of STOTT PILATES® at Marshall Eklund Pilates in San Diego, you will learn more than just choreography. You will gain the knowledge, skill and confidence to develop effective training programs for all types of clients – from post-rehabilitation patients to elite athletes. The value of your training experience will help to ensure the success of your clients, career and business.

Marshall Eklund Pilates Studio is the only educational Pilates Center for students in the San Diego area that is officially licensed by STOTT PILATES®.

Our training and certification programs and courses are designed to:

  • Fit your experience level and goals
  • Detail the logic behind each exercise and routine
  • Reinforce basic principals and technique through observation, practice teaching and instructor feedback

Intensive Certification Program

The STOTT PILATES® Intensive Program is designed for qualifying fitness and health professionals. Intensive certification is designed for individuals who have a fundamental understanding of anatomy and movement.

Each course in the program has been carefully developed to prepare you to teach STOTT PILATES® Matwork and Equipment repertoire safely, effectively and with confidence.

Intensive Course Objectives

As a student of our STOTT PILATES® Intensive Certification Program, you will learn:
  • How to apply STOTT PILATES® biomechanical principles of core stability, peripheral mobility, breathing and alignment to relevant exercises
  • Breakdown of essential and intermediate level exercises
  • Exercise essence, muscular initiation and movement sequencing
  • Variations to increase or decrease exercise intensity
  • Modifications for specific body types, postural issues, and conditions
  • Effective communication, visual skills, verbal cuing and imagery for performance enhancement and client motivation

STOTT PILATES® Certification Process

At the conclusion of each intensive course you will receive a letter of completion and the relevant continuing education credits. Upon receiving the letter of completion, you are qualified to teach Pilates to that specific course level for a period of up to six months after completion. Only when you pass your examination are you a STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor.

STOTT PILATES® certification is only awarded upon successful completion of each course and a written and practical exam. You can certify in stages by taking an exam after each course or following a series of courses. The examination must be taken within six months from completion of your last course and is in addition to the course fees.

Intensive Mat-Plus™ Repertoire (IMP)

IMP provides you with the solid foundation and skills you need to develop effective and motivating group and personal training programs. At the end of the course you will be qualified to design and teach essential and intermediate level Matwork classes, integrating small equipment to add variety and meet the specific needs of your clients.

In addition to the general course objectives you will learn:

  • Workout composition for personal and group training
  • Essential, intermediate and power workouts
  • Use of the Flex-band® exerciser, Fitness Circle® resistance ring and Arc Barrel to enhance, support and intensify strength and flexibility exercises

Course Duration: 40 hours of instruction and supervised teaching, plus a minimum of 10 hours of observation, 30 hours of physical review and 15 hours of practice teaching. The course is conducted over two weeks or three weekends.

Prerequisites: A working knowledge of functional anatomy, 30 hours of Pilates training, and three-plus years teaching movement or fitness. It is not uncommon for a motivated, hardworking student to begin this work with only two of the three suggested requirements. We encourage you to submit an application and then discuss your complete background, qualifications, and level of interest with Marshall. There are options for completing any missing elements based on your background and motivation

Intensive Reformer (IR)

IR prepares you to teach a broad range of exercises, variations and modifications performed on the Reformer®, the key piece of resistance equipment used in Pilates exercise. This course teaches you how to combine Mat and Reformer-based workouts for increased variety and intensity. Upon completion of this course you will be able to further motivate group classes and customize personal training sessions for a wide range of clients. In addition to the general course objectives, you will learn:

  • Effective use of resistance to enhance torso stability and peripheral extremity conditioning.
  • How to develop effective Reformer and combined Mat-and-Reformer programs for personal and group classes.

Prerequisites: Anatomy, Pilates training, and three-plus years of teaching movement or fitness. IMP is highly recommended. It is not uncommon for a motivated, hardworking student to begin this work with only two of the three suggested requirements. We encourage you to submit an application and then discuss your complete background, qualifications, and level of interest with Marshall. There are options for completing any missing elements based on your background and motivation

Course Duration: 50 hours of instruction and supervised teaching, plus a minimum of 10 hours observation, 40 hours of physical review, 25 hours of practice teaching. Course is conducted over three weeks or four weekends.

Intensive Cadilac, Stability Chair™ & Barrel Repertoire (ICCB)

ICCB prepares you to teach stretching and strengthening exercises on equipment designed to complete STOTT PILATES® training: Cadillac Trapeze Table; Stability Chair™; Ladder Barrel; Spine Corrector; and Arc Barrel. At the end of the course you will be able to fine-tune both personal and circuit training programs to meet post-rehabilitation needs, general fitness, and athletic conditioning goals.
Beyond the general course objectives you will learn:
  • Effective use of resistance to enhance torso stability training and peripheral extremity conditioning
  • Break down essential and intermediate level Cadillac, Stability Chair™, and Barrel exercises with modifications and variations
  • Exercise essence, muscular initiation and movement sequencing
  • How to develop dynamic programs for personal and circuit training.

Duration: Course is conducted over 4 weekends. 50 hours instruction and supervised teaching, 10 hours of observation, 40 hours of physical review, 25 hours of practice teaching
